What Is Geocaching?
Geocaching is a hi-tech game of outdoor hide and seek that is fun for all ages! It is a great activity that can help you discover new places and make new friends. Learn more about this low-cost family hobby by reading on...
All over the world people are hiding containers of items for you to find. Some are large, some are very small. You might go past them on your way to work or shopping and not even realise it. Only those involved in Geocaching know where they are.
The idea is simple. Using a hand-held Sat Nav unit enter the location of a container, called a Geocache (pronounced geo-cash). Then by following the Sat Nav the Geocache is located. Once found sign the log book with your name or team name. If an item in the container looks fun you can take it as long as something else is left in it's place. Later on record your visit on the Geocaching website so others know you have found it.
To get started visit www.geocaching.com to see the Geocaches near you and then purchase a hand-held Sat Nav unit such as the ones available from Garmin. We recommend getting a unit that can display maps, but it isn't a requirement for Geocaching.
Trackables
Some items are intended to move from one Geocache to another, rather than being kept. These items have a unique tracking number that allows their location and progress to be mapped. Often they have goals, such as reaching a specific city or continent. A finder looks up the item on the Geocaching website and learns the goal. They then place the item in another Geocache that is a bit closer to the goal.
Travel Bugs are the original trackable item, and they are one of our best selling items. Simply attach one of the tags to an item, activate it on the Geocaching website and place it into a Geocache. Then watch as other Geocachers move the item to it's goal!
